Reddit Rolls Out Video Comments for All Users
Reddit has introduced video comments, a new feature allowing users to reply to posts with short-form videos across all communities and subreddits. This update expands upon existing comment options, which previously included only text, images, and GIFs, aiming to provide more creative ways for users to engage with content. The company stated this move is part of an ongoing effort to deliver a more immersive and authentic user experience on the platform. Additionally, Reddit has implemented safety systems to check video comments before they are posted and requires communities to be public and suitable-for-work (SFW) to be eligible for the feature.
Reddit announced Thursday the launch of video comments, making the feature available to all users. This update allows Redditors to either upload an existing video or record a new short-form video directly within the comment section of any post. The new functionality is available across all Reddit communities and subreddits.
Previously, users were limited to commenting with text, images, and GIFs. With the introduction of video comments, a new video icon will appear alongside the existing image and GIF options in the comment box.
Maria Angelidou-Smith, Reddit's Chief Product Officer, stated that the company is "continually evolving Reddit to deliver a more immersive and authentic human experience." She added that "The ability to reply with video gives users more creative ways to engage in communities they love."
According to Reddit, videos posted in comments will not play automatically. The platform has also implemented safety systems designed to check video comments before they are officially posted. To be eligible for video comments, a community must be designated as public and "suitable-for-work (SFW)." The feature supports various forms of engagement, including the posting of meme responses in video format.
Reddit highlighted an example of the feature's early use with a video Ask Me Anything (AMA) session featuring Mel C. from the Spice Girls, which took place two months prior to the public rollout.
