Resident Evil: Veronica Remake to Revisit Villain Portrayal, Launches in 2027
Capcom's upcoming remake, Resident Evil: Veronica, is set to launch in 2027 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. The game, treated as a mainline entry in the franchise, will be a third-person experience from start to finish. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi indicated that the remake aims to delve deeper into its characters, including addressing the original Code Veronica's portrayal of villain Alfred Ashford, while maintaining the series' dark thematic tone.

The Resident Evil: Veronica remake is scheduled for release in 2027, according to producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi. The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Capcom is treating the remake as a mainline installment within the Resident Evil franchise, confirming it will feature third-person gameplay throughout.
Hirabayashi also addressed the portrayal of the original game's villain, Alfred Ashford, in Code Veronica. The original title featured Ashford as a character with dual personalities, often switching between himself and his sister, Alexia. The English localization of Code Veronica included protagonist Claire Redfield referring to Ashford as a "crossdressing freak" upon discovering this aspect. The original game also contained implied, but unconfirmed, problematic elements regarding Ashford's relationship and co-dependence with his sister.
In the remake, Capcom aims to explore the characters appearing in the game with greater depth, while also respecting their differences. Hirabayashi emphasized that the Resident Evil: Veronica remake will retain the original Code Veronica's tone, which sought to explore the darkest aspects of human nature.
