Roberto Mancini Considered for Italy Coaching Role Amidst Past Controversy
Roberto Mancini has emerged as a leading candidate for the Italy national football team coaching position, according to multiple reports. His potential return follows a controversial departure in August 2023, when he resigned mid-Euro 2024 qualifiers to take on the Saudi Arabia national team role. Mancini previously led Italy from 2018 to 2023, securing a Euro 2020 title and setting an international unbeaten streak record, though he also missed 2022 World Cup qualification.
Roberto Mancini is reportedly the leading candidate to become the next coach of the Italy national football team. This potential appointment has generated debate due to his controversial exit from the role in 2023.
Mancini previously managed the Azzurri from 2018 to 2023. During this period, he guided the team to victory at Euro 2020 and established a record for the longest unbeaten streak in international football, stretching 37 matches. Over this run, Italy scored 93 goals and conceded only 12. However, his tenure also saw Italy fail to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
His departure in August 2023 caused significant reaction in Italy, as he stepped down during the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Shortly after, Mancini was appointed coach of the Saudi Arabia national team. Luciano Spalletti succeeded him, serving less than two years.
Mancini has since admitted that leaving the Italy national team was a mistake. Despite this, many in Italy have not forgiven him. Italy legend Gianni Rivera publicly stated his disappointment, remarking that Mancini's decision to leave for Saudi Arabia made him undesirable as the national coach, expressing hope he would not return.
Reports suggest Mancini is on favorable terms with Giovanni Malagò, who is the favorite to win the FIGC Presidential elections on June 22, 2026. His potential return could occur following these elections. According to Fabrizio Romano and Sky Sport Italia, Mancini is currently the frontrunner for the Italy job. (Source: Yahoo Sports Soccer)
