Sami Khedira Expected to Join José Mourinho's Coaching Staff at Real Madrid
Former Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira is anticipated to join José Mourinho's coaching staff at the Santiago Bernabéu. The 39-year-old, who played under Mourinho during his initial tenure at Real Madrid, is set to take on a specialist role linking the dressing room, coaching staff, and club hierarchy. This move marks Khedira's first senior coaching position since concluding his playing career in 2021, reuniting him with his former manager.
Sami Khedira, a former Real Madrid midfielder, is expected to become part of José Mourinho’s coaching staff at the Santiago Bernabéu. This appointment comes as Mourinho continues to assemble his backroom team for his second spell as head coach of the Spanish club.
Khedira, who is now 39, played under Mourinho during the manager’s first tenure at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2015. During this period, Khedira made 161 appearances for the club, contributing to victories in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League. His extensive experience at Real Madrid and previous relationship with Mourinho are reportedly significant factors in his expected selection.
The former Germany international is anticipated to fill a specialist role within the coaching setup, acting as a liaison between the dressing room, the coaching staff, and the club's hierarchy. This would be Khedira's first senior coaching position since he retired from playing in 2021.
Mourinho was recently confirmed as Real Madrid's head coach by president Florentino Pérez. He is expected to bring several members of his previous staff, including assistants Joao Tralhao and Pedro Machado, analyst Roberto Merella, fitness coach Antonio Dias, and goalkeeper coach Nuno Santos. Khedira's addition would further enhance the team's experience.
Khedira's career includes 77 caps for Germany, where he was part of the 2014 World Cup-winning squad. He also had successful spells in the Bundesliga, La Liga, and Serie A.
Real Madrid has a history of integrating former players into coaching roles, with individuals like Álvaro Arbeloa and Zinedine Zidane previously progressing through the club's coaching ranks. Khedira is now poised to follow a similar path as he embarks on this new chapter alongside a manager who played a crucial role in his development.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, Pepe, another former Real Madrid defender, was also considered for a position, but Khedira appears to be the leading candidate.
