Scottish Fan Navigates Financial Challenges for World Cup with Community Support
Rory Phillips-Hunter, a 37-year-old estate and maintenance manager, faced significant financial hurdles to attend the World Cup in the United States to support the Scotland national team. After initial plans to stay in Boston proved too costly, Phillips-Hunter opted for Providence, Rhode Island, and joined a dedicated WhatsApp group. This community initiative helped reduce the overall costs for accommodation and transport for many Scottish fans. To fund the trip for himself and his fiancée, Phillips-Hunter reportedly maxed out a credit card and traded his car.
Rory Phillips-Hunter, a 37-year-old estate and maintenance manager from North West England, is determined to attend the World Cup in the US to watch Scotland play. Having witnessed Scotland qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, Phillips-Hunter reportedly vowed to his fiancée that they would attend, regardless of the cost.
His initial plan to secure accommodation in Boston proved too expensive, with hotel prices for eight days estimated at approximately £6,000 ($8,000) for two people. Phillips-Hunter noted that his match tickets alone were projected to exceed $1,000. Faced with these costs, he considered watching games at a bar rather than attending in person.
He then discovered Providence, Rhode Island, which was a more affordable option and closer to Gillette Stadium, where two of Scotland's games were scheduled. In Providence, Phillips-Hunter joined a WhatsApp group known as the "Providence Tartan Army." This group, which started with about 25 members, has since grown to over 1,000, bringing together Scottish fans planning to stay in the city.
The group has actively sought ways to reduce expenses for its members. For instance, they organized yellow school buses for transport to the stadium, which cost nearly $40 less per person compared to the almost $100 round-trip public transport tickets. They also secured a deal with a Marriott hotel, allowing Phillips-Hunter to book a room for $288 per night for two people.
Phillips-Hunter estimates the total cost of his trip, including travel and accommodation for himself and his fiancée, will be approximately $6,000. To afford this, he stated he sold his pickup truck for a more economical BMW, maxed out a credit card, and is operating on a limited budget. He earns about £33,000 ($44,000) annually from his job. Phillips-Hunter noted that without the deals arranged through the WhatsApp group, attending the World Cup would have been financially perilous.
According to Business Insider, the group has also raised thousands of dollars for charity by selling badges emblazoned with the Scottish Football Association crest.
