Sealed Super Mario Bros. Game Sells for Record $3 Million at Auction
A sealed copy of the classic Nintendo game, Super Mario Bros., has been sold for $3 million at Heritage Auctions. This sale establishes a new record for a video game, surpassing the previous record of $2 million, also for a copy of Super Mario Bros., which was set in 2021. The specific copy sold is from a 1989 production run and features a distinctive glossy sticker seal, which was reportedly discontinued shortly after its release.
A copy of the game Super Mario Bros., still sealed in its original packaging with the sticker intact, recently sold for $3 million at Heritage Auctions.
This transaction sets a new record for a video game, exceeding the previous record of $2 million. The prior record was also held by a copy of Super Mario Bros. and was established in 2021.
The recent auction follows another significant sale of Super Mario 64 for $1.56 million. A contributing factor to the high price of this particular Super Mario Bros. copy is its unique sealing method. According to Heritage Auctions, this 1989 second-run edition was sealed with a glossy sticker rather than shrink wrap, a method that was discontinued shortly after its use.
The auction site further states that this specific item is believed to be the earliest known sealed copy of the game in existence.
