Gomez stated, "i would never insult my friends nor was it an insult." She explained that the "lol" was a reaction to the first slide of the page. Additionally, Gomez mentioned, "Second I bet my friends on the game," referring to a screenshot of text messages she had previously shared with pals. She acknowledged losing the bet but was "poking fun at my opponents, my friends."
She further added, "Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise." Gomez also reminded her followers, "also .. It's a basketball game."
The interaction originated from an MTV Instagram post on Wednesday, June 10, featuring two photos of Swift at Madison Square Garden. One image depicted Swift hugging Mariska Hargitay, and the other showed Swift cheering alongside Este Haim. Gomez's simple "lol" in the comments had led to various interpretations online.
