Shania Twain, 60, has stated that menopause played a significant role in her journey towards body confidence. The acclaimed singer shared that she once struggled so much with her appearance that she actively avoided looking at herself in mirrors.
During her 2019 Las Vegas residency, Twain detailed a period where she became so unhappy with her body image that it led to unhealthy practices. She engaged in intense workouts and severely restricted fats and sugars from her diet, aiming to be thinner. These efforts resulted in her becoming malnourished and tearing two thigh muscles, which required her to be carried off stage.
Twain described her mindset at the time, stating she 'hated my body' and couldn't stand the changes. She recognized this as an unhealthy approach, questioning how one could avoid their own reflection.
Her experience with menopause brought a shift in perspective. Twain explained that menopause involves a loss of control over one's body, referencing bloating and an inability to easily lose weight. She noted that this realization helped her understand that 'some things you cannot control.'
This newfound acceptance transformed her outlook. Twain now embraces mirrors, saying she is ready to 'look at myself all day long.' She views menopause as a positive influence, teaching her to let go of insecurities and fear, and to love herself in the present moment rather than waiting for physical perfection.
According to Business Insider, Twain has previously highlighted how menopause helped put her insecurities into perspective, urging her to 'just love yourself now' and move past what stands in the way.
