Silicon Motion Plans PCIe 6.0 Consumer SSD Controller Amid Worsening NAND Shortages
Silicon Motion (SMI) Senior Vice President, Nelson Duann, announced plans for a PCIe 6.0 SSD controller destined for consumer solid-state drives, expected to launch next year. Duann also addressed the ongoing NAND supply crisis impacting the consumer SSD market. He projected a significant escalation of these shortages by 2027, attributing the worsening conditions to increased demand from AI data centers.

Silicon Motion (SMI) is currently developing a PCIe 6.0 SSD controller specifically designed for consumer solid-state drives. This new controller is anticipated to become available next year, according to Nelson Duann, the company's Senior Vice President.
Duann also provided insights into the broader NAND flash memory market, acknowledging a severe supply crisis presently affecting the consumer SSD sector. He further forecast that these NAND shortages are expected to intensify considerably by 2027.
The projected worsening of the supply situation is primarily attributed to the escalating demand from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, which are anticipated to consume a substantial portion of the available NAND supply.
