A single mother of five adult children has shared her ongoing journey to accept help from her grown offspring. She describes her struggle to ask for assistance, even when needed, stemming from her longtime role as their sole caregiver. This dynamic has made receiving support feel unfamiliar.

One specific instance involved assembling a new bed. Despite difficulties with instructions and tightening screws, she initially considered hiring a local handyman rather than asking her son, who lives nearby. After a frustrating night, she eventually contacted her son for help; however, his wife ultimately assisted in completing the task.

The mother noted that she rarely asks her children for help, not due to concerns about appearing needy, but because her role has always been to provide support for them. She recalled being solely responsible for various tasks, from daily care to navigating significant life events for her children. She observed that her children are generally helpful to others, offering assistance to neighbors without prompting.

She believes that now, living in separate households, her adult children cannot be expected to know her immediate needs. She cited examples such as independently changing a smoke alarm battery or adding air to her car tires, choosing not to burden her children with minor requests. Despite this, an offer from her oldest son to reserve a hotel room during a tsunami watch, and the help from her daughter-in-law with the bed, reinforced her belief that her family is reliable and willing to respond when she has a genuine need.
