Snap CEO Evan Spiegel officially launched the company's new Specs AR glasses on Tuesday during his keynote address at the Augmented World Expo (AWE). A significant advancement in the augmented reality product category, these Specs are fully wireless, distinguishing them from many other AR offerings.
Pre-orders for the Specs AR glasses are now open at a price of $2,195, which includes a refundable $200 deposit. Snap plans to ship the devices this fall to customers located in the United States, the UK, and France. The glasses will be available in two sizes: a 47mm model weighing 132 grams and a 52mm model weighing 136 grams.
The Specs feature a proprietary liquid-crystal-on-silicon display, allowing them to project the equivalent of a 24-inch desktop display for work-related tasks or a 115-inch screen for entertainment. Unlike some other AR glasses, the Specs do not require a connection to another device via a computing puck or USB-C tether. They also incorporate hand-tracking capabilities for gesture control and electrochromic lenses that can transition from clear to tinted within 10 seconds.
Internally, the Specs are powered by two Snapdragon processors. One processor manages computer vision, while the other is dedicated to operating the display lenses, hand tracking, and overall interactivity. Key specifications include a 51-degree field of view, custom stereo speakers, six high-SNR MEMS microphones, and a Swiss TR90 polymer frame. The display supports 16 million colors, and the glasses offer 7-millisecond motion-to-photon latency.
Battery life is estimated at up to four hours of mixed use, covering audio, video playback, and AI interaction. A provided charging case extends the total battery life to 20 hours.
To foster an ecosystem, Snap announced a new developer preview and native development kit. These tools will be accessible through Snap Lens Studio, with a developer preview also available in Claude Code. According to Snap, the company has filed over 7,000 patents during the decade-long development of the Specs glasses.
Evan Spiegel stated, "We believe Specs are the most capable and most wearable glasses ever built," adding, "Specs are not designed to replace the world. They're designed to bring computing into it." (Source: Mashable Tech)
