Tech Executives Commissioned as Senior Army Reserve Officers
Three technology executives, Dane Knecht from Cloudflare, Sam Pullara from Sutter Hill Ventures, and Serkan Piantino from Facebook AI Research, have been commissioned as lieutenant colonels in the U.S. Army Reserve. They joined Detachment 201, a special unit designed to integrate private-sector innovation with military modernization efforts. These new reservists will serve as senior advisors, contributing to the Army Transformation Initiative, particularly in areas like cyber, artificial intelligence, and data-driven capabilities.
On June 10, 2026, technology industry executives Dane Knecht, Sam Pullara, and Serkan Piantino commissioned into the U.S. Army's reserve ranks at a military base in Virginia. Knecht is the Chief Technology Officer of Cloudflare, Pullara serves as managing director and CTO of Sutter Hill Ventures, and Piantino is a co-founder of Facebook AI Research and a former Reddit executive.
They have joined Detachment 201, a specialized Army Reserve unit. Members of this unit are commissioned as lieutenant colonels, a rank typically achieved after over a decade of service for most officers. This direct commission process is also utilized for military medical providers, chaplains, and veterinarians.
The primary role of these reservists is to serve as senior advisors, assisting the Army with its modernization efforts, particularly the Army Transformation Initiative. Their expertise is sought for high-level technological strategies in fields such as cyber, AI, machine learning applications, and other data-driven capabilities. Members of Detachment 201 work remotely and are required to complete a minimum of 112 hours of service annually.
These new additions expand the Army's ties with the technology sector, building on previous direct commissions a year prior that included Shyam Sankar (CTO Palantir), Andrew Bosworth (CTO Meta), Kevin Weil (former CPO OpenAI), and Bob McGrew (advisor Thinking Machines Lab, former CRO OpenAI).
Detachment 201 personnel are governed by a multi-layered ethics framework, including the Joint Ethics Regulation. This framework mandates confidential financial disclosures, annual ethics training, legal review of work assignments, and recusal from any matters that could affect their financial interests. Their strategic counsel has previously focused on critical challenges such as munitions supply chain data analysis, organic industrial base investments, and strategies for autonomous systems and counter-drone technologies.
According to Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Orlando Howard, the program selects highly skilled civilian technology professionals at the executive or C-suite level to serve as part-time strategic advisers. (Source: Business Insider)
