Australian indie-pop group The Tullamarines delivered a highly anticipated cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' during their inaugural appearance on triple j's 'Like A Version.' The four-piece band, comprising Angus Purvis, Lucinda Machin, Josh, and Benny, navigated the song's dynamics, featuring traded harmonies in quieter sections before emphasizing the well-known bass breakdown and culminating in a closing jam.
Alongside the cover, The Tullamarines also performed their original track 'Running On Empty.' The decision to cover 'The Chain' was met with initial hesitation within the band. Vocalist Angus Purvis stated that 'The Chain' was an option that made them 'very, very scared,' expressing doubts about doing the song justice. Co-vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lucinda Machin indicated that the band ultimately decided to 'give it a go,' describing the song's lyrical themes as 'very angsty.'
'The Chain,' a track from Fleetwood Mac's 1977 album 'Rumours,' achieved significant success, spending 31 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and selling over 40 million copies globally. Despite not being released as a standalone single, it has become one of the band's most recognizable songs, frequently featured in various media and covered by numerous artists.
The Tullamarines are experiencing growing momentum within the Australian independent music scene. Their 2025 sophomore EP, 'Safety Blanket,' has received a nomination for Best Independent Pop Album or EP at this year's AIR Awards. Winners for this category are scheduled to be announced at an invite-only ceremony at Adelaide Town Hall on July 30. Over the past year, the band has built its profile through sold-out headline shows, festival appearances, achieving full triple j rotation, and supporting international acts such as The Vaccines and Everything Everything.
According to Billboard, The Tullamarines' performance was among the most anticipated covers of the year.
