Tomb Raider Developers Address Lara Croft's Design Philosophy for Upcoming Remake
Developers for the upcoming remake, 'Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis,' have stated that Lara Croft's new design was not created to appeal to specific audiences or cultural viewpoints. Game director Raul Siqueira and experience director Jeff Adams explained that the character design process was organic, focusing on portraying Lara as a fully developed icon. They emphasized doing justice to her established persona rather than balancing attractiveness with ability or responding to online discussions.

The new design for Lara Croft in the upcoming remake, 'Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis,' has generated significant discussion and debate online. The game's development team, however, clarifies that the design was not an attempt to cater to any specific audience or side of what has been termed a "culture war."
Speaking at Summer Game Fest, game director Raul Siqueira and experience director Jeff Adams indicated that the design process for Lara Croft was organic. They stated the team did not aim to balance her attractiveness with her talent or abilities. Adams commented that the developers avoid viewing the character from such angles, focusing instead on presenting Lara as the "icon that we've come to know" and bringing her into "the most fully focused version that she's ever been presented in."
Siqueira further emphasized the importance of Lara Croft's personality, highlighting her confidence and wittiness, which he described as crucial elements. He noted appreciation for Alix Wilton Regan, who is involved in bringing the character to life.
'Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis' is a remake of the original game and follows the "Survivor trilogy," which reimagined the series with a grittier narrative and updated gameplay. Actor Camilla Luddington previously voiced Lara Croft in the Survivor trilogy. In related news, a 'Tomb Raider' series is also under development for Prime Video, starring Sophie Turner.
The game is scheduled for release in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC.
