Tornado Warning Issued as England Arrives at World Cup Base in Kansas City
England's World Cup preparations in Kansas City were immediately impacted by a tornado warning shortly after their arrival. The team held its first community training session despite the looming threat of severe storms, which led to the early closure of the city's fan festival for public safety. This incident follows previous weather disruptions during their pre-tournament camp in Florida.
England's squad arrived at their World Cup base in Kansas City on Saturday, only to be met with a tornado warning that threatened to disrupt their first day of preparations. The team touched down in the Midwest after a day and a half off in Florida.
The squad conducted a community training session at their Swope Soccer Village base at 5 PM local time, under searing temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius. All 26 members of the squad participated, with approximately 700 spectators watching the session. Earlier, a couple of hundred people greeted the team at their hotel, the Inn at Meadowbrook in the south of the city.
A tornado warning was issued for parts of Kansas City, with severe storms anticipated in the early evening. This prompted organizers to close the FIFA fan festival early at 5 PM, citing public safety as their top priority due to the anticipated severe weather. Previous weather issues, including a thunderstorm that delayed a warm-up friendly against Costa Rica, had also affected England's pre-tournament camp in Florida, though none were as severe as a tornado threat.
Prior to their arrival, the team's base experienced a theft on Friday, with training equipment, including some team boots and official tournament balls, reported stolen.
England is set to commence their World Cup campaign against Croatia on Wednesday. Their Group L fixtures also include matches against Ghana and Panama.
