Trump's Name Removed from Kennedy Center Facade
Physical signage bearing former President Donald Trump's name has been removed from the facade and grounds of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. This action follows a federal court order, which the institution's leadership initially resisted. Matt Floca, the Kennedy Center's executive director and chief operating officer, confirmed the removal in a court filing on Saturday, June 13.
All physical signage on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts building and its grounds, including the front portico, that purported to rename the venue after former President Donald Trump has been taken down. The removal was confirmed by Matt Floca, the Kennedy Center's executive director and chief operating officer, in a federal court filing on Saturday, June 13.
This action comes in compliance with a court order. The Kennedy Center's leadership had initially resisted the directive, seeking last-minute extensions to retain Trump's name pending an appeal. However, two courts rejected these requests, leading to the Saturday deadline for compliance.
While the signage has been removed, the process was not immediately visible to the public. Scaffolding erected for the task remained covered by a tarp, obscuring the view of the facade. A reporter, however, was able to confirm through an opening in the tarp that the letters forming Trump's name were no longer affixed to the building.
Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center board who had sued to remove references to the former president, was seen at the plaza and expressed satisfaction with the outcome. Beatty stated, "The rule of law prevailed, and that is worth celebrating."
The addition of Trump's name to the building had marked an unusual chapter for the Kennedy Center, which was dedicated to the memory of President John F. Kennedy upon its construction in 1964. Trump's name had been added to the building after he influenced the institution's leadership. The current removal closes this particular chapter in the venue's history.
According to Billboard, this development marks a setback for Trump regarding his influence on the nation's capital's physical landscape. (Source: Billboard)
