Uruguay played to a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in their World Cup Group H opener. Saudi Arabia, considered a significant underdog, held a lead for most of the match before Uruguay equalized late in the game.
Saudi Arabia opened the scoring in the first half when Abdulelah Al Amri found the back of the net, giving his team a 1-0 advantage that stood at halftime. Saudi goaltender Mohammed Al-Owais delivered a masterful performance, making nine saves and preventing Uruguay from scoring until the 80th minute. Early in the game, Al-Owais stopped a diving header from Federico Viñas in the 30th minute to maintain a scoreless tie.
Uruguay controlled possession for two-thirds of the game and dominated the second half with a 15-0 advantage in shots. However, they struggled to convert their opportunities against Al-Owais. Maxi Araújo eventually scored in the 80th minute off a rebounded header, leveling the score at 1-1 and ensuring Uruguay earned a point from the match.
Uruguay finished the game with a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. The draw means that all four teams in Group H, including Spain and Cape Verde who also played to a draw, have one point after their opening matches. Looking ahead, Spain will face Saudi Arabia and Uruguay will play Cape Verde on Sunday.
