Uruguay and Saudi Arabia commenced their FIFA World Cup Group H campaigns with a 1-1 draw at Miami Stadium.
Saudi Arabia opened the scoring four minutes before the halftime break. Abdulelah Al Amri turned the ball into the net after Uruguay keeper Fernando Muslera parried a header from Hassan Al Tambakti following a corner. This goal put Saudi Arabia in the lead, reminiscent of their victory against Argentina in the previous 2022 World Cup.
Uruguay increased their pressure in the second half, registering a total of 28 shots on goal. Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais made several key saves, including tipping a low strike from Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte onto the post. He later denied Federico Valverde in stoppage time.
Maxi Araujo secured the equalizer for Uruguay with 10 minutes left in the match. The goal came after Al Owais pushed Federico Vinas' header towards the Uruguayan attacker.
Uruguay's coach, Marcelo Bielsa, made a double substitution at halftime, which reportedly brought more energy to his team. Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez was among those substituted, having recorded only eight touches in the first half.
The draw, following Cape Verde's tie with Spain, leaves Group H open. Saudi Arabia will face Spain on Sunday, June 21, at 17:00 BST in Atlanta, while Uruguay will play Cape Verde at Miami Stadium on the same day at 23:00 BST.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, Mohammed Al Owais's performance in goal, making nine saves, was pivotal in securing a point for Saudi Arabia.
