The game, held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, averaged nearly 16 million viewers across Fox, Fox One, and Tubi, peaking with over 18.8 million viewers. This viewership also marked the most-watched men’s World Cup group stage telecast in English-language U.S. history.
The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) achieved a significant viewership milestone during its 2026 World Cup group stage opener on Friday night. The team's 4-1 win against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, drew an average of 15,986,000 viewers across Fox, Fox One, and Tubi.
This viewership figure represents the most-watched USMNT telecast ever. It also stands as the most-watched men’s World Cup group stage telecast in English-language U.S. history. The broadcast peaked with 18,860,000 viewers between 10:45-11 p.m. ET.
The performance on the field also set a record for the USMNT, with its four goals being the most the team has ever scored in a World Cup match. The average viewership for this match showed a 106% increase compared to the USMNT's 2022 World Cup opener in Qatar, which averaged 7,763,000 viewers for a 1-1 tie against Wales on November 21, 2022.
The viewership data, provided by Fox Sports PR, cited Nielsen preliminary fast-nationals, Adobe Analytics, and data from Tubi. It was noted that Nielsen's methodology shifted last fall to incorporate "Big Data" from smart TVs and set-top boxes alongside its traditional panel. This 2026 World Cup is also only the second time Nielsen has included out-of-home viewing in its estimates.
Beyond the USMNT match, the tournament's opening game between Mexico and South Africa on Thursday afternoon, which saw Mexico secure a 2-0 win in Mexico City, attracted an average of 6,309,000 viewers. Fox reported that this made it the most-watched men’s World Cup opening match and non-USMNT World Cup group stage telecast in English-language U.S. history.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, this early viewership data suggests a strong potential for multiple records to be broken during the current World Cup tournament.
