A video circulating online depicted fans swarming the hotel, located a few blocks from Madison Square Garden. The footage showed an egg cracking on a street sign moments before Wembanyama turned to confront a person near the hotel's entrance. It remains unconfirmed who threw the object or if it made contact with Wembanyama.

The confrontation occurred after a challenging game for the Spurs, who are now on the brink of elimination. The team experienced a significant setback, blowing a 29-point lead to the Knicks, a game in which Wembanyama missed two crucial free throws in the final minutes.
