Vim Classic 8.3 Released as AI-Free Vim Fork
Vim Classic 8.3, the inaugural stable version of a new long-term support (LTS) fork of Vim, has been released, distinguishing itself by being maintained without generative AI tools. This release is based on Vim 8.2.0148 and incorporates bug fixes and patches backported from later upstream Vim versions. Drew DeVault, CEO/founder of SourceHut, initiated the fork after expressing concerns about the use of LLM-assisted development in both Vim and Neovim.
Vim Classic 8.3 has been released as the first stable version of a new long-term support fork of Vim. This iteration is notable for its commitment to being maintained without the use of generative AI tools in its development.
According to Linuxiac, the new release is built upon Vim 8.2.0148. It integrates selected bug fixes and patches that have been backported from more recent upstream Vim releases. Additionally, original patches were developed to ensure compatibility with newer toolchains.
Drew DeVault, CEO and founder of SourceHut, first announced Vim Classic in March 2026. His decision to fork Vim stemmed from objections to the involvement of LLM-assisted development in both Vim and Neovim. DeVault expressed a preference for using software developed without such AI assistance, aiming to provide an alternative for like-minded users.
Following the established charityware model of Vim, Vim Classic continues to support Bram Moolenaar's initiative for children in Uganda. The release is available as a signed source tarball from SourceHut, with future significant updates expected to be communicated via the project's mailing list.
DeVault cited a deep personal connection to Vim, stating that much of his written work has passed through the editor. He also articulated broader concerns regarding the environmental and societal impacts of artificial intelligence, including its contributions to energy consumption, its potential to eliminate jobs, and its effects on global supply chains and working conditions.
DeVault invites users who share his perspective to adopt Vim Classic and contribute to its ongoing maintenance by providing necessary patches.
