Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé, and Alessia Cara Lead Canada's 2026 World Cup Opening Ceremony
The 2026 FIFA World Cup Canada Opening Ceremony took place on Friday, June 12, at Toronto Stadium, preceding Team Canada's opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The event featured renowned artists Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé, and Alessia Cara, along with performances by Nora Fatehi, DJ Sanjoy, Vegedream, Elyanna, and Jessie Reyez, showcasing Canadian identity and culture through music. FIFA President Gianni Infantino highlighted the ceremony as a reflection of Canada's energy and a welcoming celebration for the world.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada officially commenced with a star-studded opening ceremony on Friday, June 12. Held at Toronto Stadium, the event preceded Team Canada's tournament opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The ceremony showcased Canadian talent and culture, featuring performances by Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé, and Alessia Cara.
Alessia Cara initiated the festivities with a performance of her 2016 song "Wild Things." Her set included singing from inside a large gold-outlined soccer ball, accompanied by dancers waving flags and displaying artwork inspired by Canadian wildlife.
Other musical acts included Nora Fatehi, DJ Sanjoy, and rapper Vegedream, who performed "Siir" from the official FIFA World Cup 2026 album. Elyanna and Jessie Reyez also took the stage to perform "Illuminate," another track from the project. Alanis Morissette delivered a rendition of the Canadian national anthem, "O Canada," while violinist Aleksandar Gajić performed the national anthem of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Michael Bublé, joined by the Sole Power Choir, concluded the ceremony with Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me."
FIFA President Gianni Infantino commented on the Toronto ceremony, stating it would be "a powerful reflection of Canada’s identity and the energy surrounding the FIFA World Cup 2026." He added that "through music, culture and unforgettable performances, we will welcome the world with a celebration that is uniquely Canadian while also connected to a larger story unfolding across Mexico and the United States." Infantino described it as "a moment of pride, unity and anticipation as Canada takes its place on football’s biggest stage."
