Anthropic Contests Trump Administration's AI Export Control Directive
AI company Anthropic engaged with the Trump administration over an export control directive affecting its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models. The directive, issued on a Friday afternoon, mandated the suspension of access to these AI models for "any foreign national," including Anthropic's own employees, both inside and outside the United States. In response, Anthropic evaluated disabling the products and dispatched representatives to Washington, D.C., seeking to influence the administration's decision.
Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic found itself in dispute with the Trump administration regarding the release of its latest AI models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5.
On a Friday at 5:21 PM, the company received a US export control directive. This order instructed Anthropic to suspend access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models for "any foreign national," a restriction that included foreign national Anthropic employees, regardless of their location within or outside the US.
Anthropic determined that complying with the directive would necessitate completely disabling the products, which the company had spent the preceding week promoting. In response to the federal order, Anthropic sent representatives to Washington, D.C., with the aim of altering the administration's stance on the issue.
According to The Verge, the company spent the weekend addressing this challenge.
