Darren Jackson Expresses Concern Over Celtic Backroom Staff Delays

Former Celtic striker Darren Jackson has conveyed his "surprise and disappointment" regarding the unconfirmed status of Martin O'Neill's backroom team. This delay follows O'Neill's permanent appointment as manager of the club.

Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham were identified as key lieutenants under O'Neill, playing a significant role in guiding Celtic to both the league title and the Scottish Cup last season. Reports indicate that both individuals have been asked to consider a pay cut if they wish to continue in their roles.

Additionally, Gavin Strachan, Stephen McManus, and goalkeeper coach Stevie Woods were part of the backroom team responsible for delivering Celtic's fifth consecutive league title. Their futures are also part of the current uncertainty surrounding O'Neill's staff.

Jackson told BBC Sportsound that he was "very surprised and disappointed for those guys." He emphasized the enduring importance of O'Neill's staff, recalling that during O'Neill's initial tenure as manager, individuals like Steve Walford and John Robertson would lead training sessions early in the week, with O'Neill's presence later elevating the atmosphere.

He commended the training and organization provided by Maloney and Fotheringham, alongside Stephen McManus and Gavin Strachan. Jackson credited the coaching staff significantly for their role in the team's strong finish last season, stating that O'Neill's presence helped unify the club and fans, contributing to an "incredible" run of seven consecutive wins.
