Embolo Penalty Puts Switzerland Ahead of Qatar, Sets Tournament Scoring Record
Breel Embolo scored a penalty in the 13th minute to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead over Qatar in their Group B match. The goal followed a collision between Qatar goalkeeper Abunada and Swiss player Remo Freuler inside the box. Embolo's successful conversion also marks a significant personal achievement, as he has now scored in four different major tournaments, becoming only the second Swiss player to do so, after Xherdan Shaqiri. Yesterday, Canada and Bosnia drew, leaving Switzerland at the top of Group B with three points.
Switzerland took an early lead against Qatar in their Group B match, with Breel Embolo converting a penalty in the 13th minute.
The penalty was awarded after a collision involving Qatar goalkeeper Abunada and Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler. Freuler received a pass from Embolo and reached the ball first before being tackled by Abunada. The referee immediately pointed to the spot. Abunada briefly stayed down after taking a blow to the face but was able to continue without apparent injury. A quick VAR check confirmed the decision, clearing Freuler of any offside position.
Embolo's penalty goal confirmed his consistent performance in major tournaments. He has now scored in EURO 2020, the 2022 World Cup, EURO 2024, and the 2026 World Cup. This achievement makes him only the second player in Switzerland's history to score in four different major international competitions, a feat previously accomplished by Xherdan Shaqiri, who scored in six.
Following this result, the provisional Group B standings are: Switzerland with 3 points, Bosnia with 1 point, Canada with 1 point, and Qatar with 0 points.
