Former Amazon Executive Reflects on Experience Working with Jeff Bezos
David Selinger, cofounder and CEO of AI security firm Deep Sentinel, has reflected on his time working directly with Jeff Bezos at Amazon starting in January 2003. Selinger states that Bezos's intense leadership and unique vision significantly influenced his approach to AI and business. This experience helped shape his career and eventually led to his current venture, Deep Sentinel, which is also backed by Bezos.
David Selinger, the 48-year-old CEO of Pleasanton, California-based AI security firm Deep Sentinel, worked at Amazon in the early 2000s. Selinger, who cofounded Deep Sentinel, began his tenure at Amazon in January 2003 as the manager of customer behavior research.
During his time at Amazon, Selinger worked directly with Jeff Bezos, meeting with him once or twice a week. He described Bezos as "amazingly intense" and someone who made him "rethink the way I view the world." Selinger noted the "gladiatorial culture" at Amazon, where employees often worked 80-hour weeks.
Bezos's leadership philosophy included a belief in a trillion-dollar opportunity for e-commerce, even when media speculation suggested Amazon's impending failure. He demonstrated confidence and clarity, pushing forward with warehouse construction despite taking on debt. Bezos also developed the concept of "two-pizza teams," small, independent units designed for volatility rather than stability, which he believed attracted top talent.
Selinger stated that Bezos emphasized the transformative power of data, a concept not widely recognized in the early 2000s. Selinger's biggest accomplishment at Amazon, according to him, was convincing Bezos to allow the advertising business to be developed.
Selinger's current company, Deep Sentinel, uses AI to prevent crime and innovate home security, a venture that is also backed by Jeff Bezos. His experience at Amazon significantly shaped his AI and business acumen, contributing to his professional trajectory.
