Google has revealed a series of updates for its Android and Wear OS platforms, alongside the introduction of a new operating system, Android XR.
Android 17 brings several new functionalities, including floating “Bubble” app windows designed to enhance multitasking capabilities. A new Screen Reaction recording mode is also being introduced. For users with foldable phones, Android 17 will feature a 50/50 split gaming mode and new gamepad controls. Other additions include a feature similar to Apple's Handoff, the ability to share one-time location data with applications, and “Pixel Glow” light animations, which were identified in a beta version. Gemini Intelligence features are slated to debut later this year.
The Android 17 update is first becoming available for Pixel phones, with a subsequent rollout to other devices. Beta versions of Android 17 have been released, with the second beta now available for Google Pixel devices.
Wear OS 7 introduces Live Updates and promises improved battery life for smartwatches. This update also prepares for connections with new Android XR smart glasses, which are expected to launch this fall. Wear OS 7 will enable users to track deliveries and sports scores directly from their wrist.
Android XR is positioned as a new operating system specifically for headsets and smart glasses. The Google/Xreal Aura XR glasses are currently available for preorder, signaling a collaboration between Google and Xreal. Both companies have extended their hardware partnership for Android XR, which includes Google's Project Aura glasses built with Xreal.
According to The Verge, these updates represent Google's latest advancements across its mobile, wearable, and extended reality ecosystems.
