Grêmio's 2026 Transfer Strategy Prioritizes Sales and Bargains
Grêmio's board is developing its squad strategy for the second half of 2026, focusing on financial prudence. The primary goal is to avoid significant spending, concentrate on bargain acquisitions, and generate revenue through player sales after an initial investment of approximately R$100 million earlier in the year. The club aims to address key weaknesses, particularly at right-back, while navigating the financial necessity of player negotiations.
Grêmio's board is mapping out its squad moves for the second half of 2026, even though the next transfer window is more than a month away. The club from Rio Grande do Sul has a clear financial objective: avoid major spending, prioritize bargain deals, and sell players to raise cash. This approach follows an investment of around R$100 million at the start of the year.
Reinforcement efforts will focus on the right-back position, identified as a main weakness for Luís Castro’s team. Current specialists Marcos Rocha and João Pedro have seen reduced playing time, leading coach Castro to utilize forward Pavon as a temporary solution.
The club openly acknowledges its financial need to negotiate player transfers to secure funds. Midfielder Gabriel Mec and center-back Viery, both young and current starters, are considered prime candidates for sale. Should these sales materialize, the board will need to seek replacements to maintain the strength of the starting lineup.
The situation of midfielder Arthur is also a priority. His loan deal from Juventus, Italy, concludes on June 30. Despite mutual interest from both the player and Grêmio to continue their association, an agreement with the Italian club has not yet been reached. Without a new deal, Arthur is expected to depart Porto Alegre.
To further alleviate financial pressure, Grêmio plans to move on players who have seen limited use by Luís Castro before the calendar break. Dodi, Monsalve, João Pedro, and André Henrique are among those potentially leaving. Center-back Kannemann, despite infrequent play, holds a different status due to his leadership role behind the scenes.
This cautious approach is informed by the club's recent transfer activities. Grêmio made six signings at the beginning of the year, including financial investments in midfielders Leo Pérez and Nardoni, and forwards Tetê and Enamorado. Goalkeeper Weverton and left-back Caio Paulista were acquired without transfer fees, with Weverton joining after contract termination and Caio Paulista on loan from Palmeiras.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, this strategy aims to balance squad competitiveness with financial stability.
