India Advocates for Human Oversight in Military AI at UN
India's Ambassador Charanjeet Singh highlighted the critical need to preserve human judgment and oversight throughout the artificial intelligence (AI) lifecycle within the military domain. Speaking at informal exchanges in Geneva on June 15, Singh emphasized that decisions concerning the use of force must not be transferred solely to machines, despite the rapid integration of AI into armed forces globally. India was one of 30 countries contributing to the resulting Secretary-General's report on this issue.
India has asserted that human judgment and oversight are indispensable in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) within the military domain. This stance was articulated by Indian Ambassador Charanjeet Singh during informal exchanges on military AI, held in Geneva on June 15.
Ambassador Singh underscored the necessity of preserving human involvement "throughout the AI lifecycle." He stated that decisions pertaining to the use of force cannot be transferred to machines, even as armed forces worldwide are swiftly incorporating AI technologies into their operations.
India was among 30 nations that contributed to the Secretary-General's report, which was a result of these discussions on artificial intelligence in the military domain.
