Fifteen-year-old Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was involved in an on-field altercation during an India A match against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla on Monday. The incident saw Sooryavanshi push an opposition player, Vishen Halambage, following a heated exchange after India's narrow defeat in a Super Over. Sri Lanka A wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella intervened to separate the players. Sooryavanshi, a left-handed opener, has recently garnered significant attention for his performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, where he was the leading run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals. His success led to his selection for India's senior men's team for upcoming T20 tours.

According to Indian media and broadcast footage, Sri Lanka A's Vishen Halambage exchanged words with departing Indian batters. Sooryavanshi then responded to Halambage and shoved him. Sri Lanka A wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella intervened to separate the two players and calm the situation. While teams exchanged handshakes, TV images reportedly showed Sooryavanshi visibly upset.
This incident follows a period of significant attention for Sooryavanshi due to his performance in the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he amassed 776 runs, finishing as the tournament's leading run-scorer. He recorded one century and five half-centuries, earning him the Orange Cap for the leading run-getter, as well as the IPL’s Most Valuable Player and Emerging Player prizes.
His success in the IPL led to his selection for India’s senior men’s team for their T20 tours of Ireland and England. He is reportedly in line to become India's youngest player, potentially surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut at 16 years and 205 days in 1989. India's senior team is scheduled to play Ireland on June 26 and 28 in Belfast, with the England series commencing on July 1 in Chester-le-Street.
