International Space Station Astronaut Photographs San Francisco
An astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) captured a detailed photograph of San Francisco, California, on May 27, 2026. The image provides a unique perspective on the city's blend of urban development, expansive green spaces, and active maritime operations. It highlights iconic landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and the prominent Golden Gate Park, showcasing the city's distinct geographical and man-made features from orbit.
An astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) acquired a photograph of San Francisco, California, on May 27, 2026. The image offers an overhead view of the Northern California city, illustrating its urban landscape, significant green areas, and maritime activity.
The photograph was taken during a break in cloud cover over downtown San Francisco and nearby communities, following a period of scattered showers and thunderstorms in California's Bay Area. It features prominent regional landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, which links the northern San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County, and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, extending across the bay towards Oakland.
Within the dense urban environment, Golden Gate Park is distinctly visible as a long, rectangular green strip. Spanning over 1,000 acres (400 hectares), the park incorporates meadows, gardens, wooded sections, and lakes. Additional green space, part of a national recreation area, is also evident around the Golden Gate Bridge to the north.
The downward-looking perspective provides a clear view of San Francisco's street grids, which were developed over the city’s hilly terrain in stages. Market Street, located in the heart of downtown, runs southwest to northeast and divides two distinct grid orientations. Along the northeastern and eastern waterfront, various structures like a historic wharf, seawalls, and piers—many constructed in the early 1900s, with some dating back to the 1800s—project into the bay.
The adjacent waters show heavy maritime traffic, including cargo, container, and cruise ships, alongside regional ferries. Breaking waves are noticeable along the western coast at Ocean Beach, a 3.5-mile sandy stretch bordering Golden Gate Park. The National Weather Service had previously warned of hazardous conditions at local beaches around May 27, 2026, due to strong northerly winds and long-period swells contributing to an increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves.
The photograph, identified as ISS074-E-619284, was taken by a member of the Expedition 74 crew using a Nikon Z9 digital camera with an 800-millimeter focal length. It is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit at NASA Johnson Space Center, with support from the International Space Station Program.
