The controversy arose after McNutt questioned Swift's loyalty during the Game 4 broadcast when the pop superstar attended the game courtside. McNutt remarked, "She’s not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl," a clip that subsequently went viral on social media, drawing a strong reaction from Swift's fanbase.

Following the Knicks' championship-clinching Game 5 victory, Brunson addressed the situation directly. While crossing paths with McNutt during the postgame celebration, he offered words of support and a message to Swift's devoted followers: "I just want to say something to the Swifties. She’s a really good one, cut her some slack. It’s all good, I promise."

McNutt later used her Instagram Stories to address the backlash. She acknowledged her error, stating, "I said what I said. Here’s the deal, if I’m wrong — I am wrong, apparently." McNutt noted she was unaware Swift owned an Amar'e Stoudemire jersey, which demonstrated her fandom. She explained that her comments stemmed from not having seen Swift at games recently and cited her five years with the organization, knowing many consistent celebrity attendees.
