Lyanco Aims for Atlético-MG Comeback During Copa Break After Injury
Atlético-MG central defender Lyanco is utilizing the current midseason break to regain his form following a serious Achilles tendon injury sustained last October. After a 5.5-month recovery, he returned in March but has since struggled to consistently perform at his previous high level, frequently alternating between the starting lineup and the bench. The player views the break as a crucial opportunity for individual training to secure his position before the squad reconvenes on June 22.
Lyanco, a central defender for Atlético-MG, is working to regain his form and secure his place within the team during the current midseason break. He had previously established himself as a key defensive figure for the club, reportedly wearing the captain's armband between 2024 and 2025.
His recent challenges stem from a significant Achilles tendon injury suffered in October of last year, which necessitated five and a half months of recovery. Lyanco made his official return on March 18, playing for three minutes in a match against São Paulo.
Since his return, the defender has reportedly struggled to consistently perform at his prior high level, leading to him alternating between starting lineup appearances and the bench. Before the break in the calendar, he started in only one of Atlético-MG's last five matches.
In an interview, Lyanco reflected on his situation, stating that it was a "very complicated injury." He added, "At first, I had to be a little patient, especially because I came back in the Brasileirão, not in the Mineiro. Of course, after an injury, you don’t come back the way you were. Everyone who goes through that faces difficulties in returning to their previous level. I’m someone who likes to work, and I’m patient."
He views the suspension of national competitions as an opportune moment for focused training. Lyanco concluded, "I think that when you have time to work, not only on the collective side but also individually, it’s a break that helps a lot. I hope I can make the most of this moment and come back stronger."
The Atlético-MG squad is currently on a break and is scheduled to return to Cidade do Galo on June 22 for a midseason training period. Their first official match following the hiatus is set for July 22 against Bahia.
