Manchester United Adjusts Midfield Transfer Strategy
Manchester United is reportedly re-evaluating its midfield transfer targets for the summer window due to significant player valuations. The club has shifted its focus after Nottingham Forest reportedly rejected a bid exceeding £120 million from another club for Elliot Anderson, who was previously considered a primary target. Attention has now reportedly turned to Mateus Fernandes and Alex Scott, though both players are also associated with high price tags from their respective clubs, West Ham United and Bournemouth.
Manchester United is reportedly adjusting its transfer strategy for midfield acquisitions, with initial targets proving to be outside their valuation parameters. Elliot Anderson, previously viewed as United’s top midfield target, saw Nottingham Forest reportedly reject an offer exceeding £120 million from Manchester City, a price point United is not prepared to meet.
Following this, Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a priority target, with United expected to submit an opening bid. However, West Ham United reportedly values Fernandes at £80 million, a demand United is not prepared to meet.
Alex Scott is another player under consideration. Bournemouth reportedly values Scott highly, with a potential £60 million price tag this summer. Bournemouth has stated he is not for sale and is reportedly working on a contract renewal that could include a release clause around £75 million.
Other midfield players reportedly remaining under consideration include Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, and Sander Berge. Fulham, who paid Burnley £25 million for Berge, would reportedly expect a profit from any sale.
In related transfer news, Jadon Sancho's confirmed free agent exit marks a notable departure. Signed from Borussia Dortmund in a €85 million deal in 2021, he leaves without a fee, despite the club holding an option to extend his contract.
The goalkeeper situation at the club remains unsettled. Senne Lammens is reportedly the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. Altay Bayindir is expected to leave, Andre Onana returns from his Trabzonspor loan with limited suitors, and Radek Vitek may seek first-team football. Tom Heaton remains third choice after signing a one-year extension. United has reportedly explored options such as Karl Darlow, who will become a free agent, and Sam Johnstone.
Marcus Rashford’s future is also a complex issue, with Barcelona’s €30 million option having expired. His reported salary of more than £300,000 per week could potentially delay any exit. United is also reportedly open to offers for Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, this summer for Manchester United is focused on correction rather than spectacle.
