Meta's Threads Reaches 500 Million Monthly Active Users
Meta announced that its Threads platform has achieved 500 million monthly active users. This milestone positions Threads against competitors, with estimates placing X's monthly active users at around 560 million. The company attributes significant growth to its "Communities" feature, leading to the launch of several new enhancements for community engagement and personalized content control.
Meta's Threads platform has now reached 500 million monthly active users, the company announced on Tuesday. This development follows the launch of Threads as an alternative to services like X.
While X does not publicly report its monthly active user figures, estimates suggest it has approximately 560 million users. Meta highlighted that its "Communities" feature has been a significant driver of Threads' growth, fostering engagement among groups of users discussing specific topics.
To mark this achievement, Meta is advancing Communities out of beta and introducing several new features. These include a Communities Hub, accessible from the app's main menu, designed to simplify the discovery and switching between communities. Communities will also receive distinct icons for easier recognition. A "Community Progress" visual cue will indicate how close a topic is to reaching the necessary popularity and engagement to become a formal Community. Furthermore, frequent contributors to communities will be granted "community champion" status, and local Communities are being launched, starting with native language tags in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
Another new feature, called "Your Algo," allows users to privately control the conversations they see in their feed. This feature complements "Dear Algo," which enables users to indicate preferences for content. "Your Algo" offers more granular control, allowing users to apply their preferences for one, three, or seven days, though a permanent option is not available. Similar algorithm controls were recently introduced on Instagram.
"Your Algo" is currently rolling out in the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
