Mexico's President Sheinbaum Anticipates Meeting King Felipe VI of Spain
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Tuesday a high probability of meeting King Felipe VI of Spain during his upcoming trip to Mexico. The King is scheduled to attend the Spain-Uruguay World Cup match on June 26 in Guadalajara. Diplomatic authorities are currently discussing the final details for the anticipated meeting, which would take place in Mexico City. This potential dialogue is viewed as a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations, following a period of tension and recent diplomatic overtures.
President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico stated on Tuesday that there is a high likelihood she will meet with King Felipe VI of Spain. The meeting is expected to occur during the King's visit to Mexico to attend the World Cup match between Spain and Uruguay on June 26 in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
Sheinbaum indicated that discussions are ongoing between diplomatic authorities from both nations to finalize the details of the potential encounter. She added that an announcement could be made within the next day or two. King Felipe VI's attendance at the World Cup match is a result of an invitation extended by the Mexican government to heads of state and representatives of participating countries.
The Spanish Royal House confirmed the monarch's attendance at the match in May. The anticipated meeting between President Sheinbaum and King Felipe VI, which would be held in Mexico City, represents the highest level of dialogue between Mexico and Spain in recent years.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries experienced tension during the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, primarily due to disagreements concerning the legacy of the Spanish Conquest. The last time a Mexican president met with the Spanish monarch was eight years ago, when former President Enrique Peña Nieto met with King Felipe VI and former head of the Spanish Government Mariano Rajoy in Spain.
In recent months, both nations have shown signs of rapprochement. This includes King Felipe’s public acknowledgment of 'abuses' during the Conquest. Sheinbaum described the King's statement as 'a gesture; an approach that we acknowledge' and emphasized the importance of continued efforts to recognize the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica and other parts of Latin America.
The potential meeting between President Sheinbaum and King Felipe VI is interpreted as a further gesture toward normalizing and strengthening bilateral ties, leveraging the international visibility provided by the 2026 World Cup.
