Yucatán Peninsula Shaken by Second Cuba-Centered Earthquake in Eight Days
The Yucatán Peninsula experienced a 5.1 magnitude earthquake on Monday, marking the second tremor centered off the coast of Cuba in eight days. This seismic event, following a 6.1 magnitude quake a week prior, startled residents in a region not typically prone to earthquakes. State authorities quickly dispelled fears of a tsunami reaching Mexico's Quintana Roo coast and are focusing on inspecting infrastructure for potential structural damage. No major injuries or significant damage have been reported thus far.
A 5.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded shortly after noon on Monday, shaking the Yucatán Peninsula. This event follows a 6.1 magnitude earthquake eight days prior, which caused damage to glass windows and building facades at hotels in Cancún.
Both seismic events were centered off the coast of Cuba. The first temblor's epicenter was located 118 kilometers offshore from Mantua, Cuba. The recent earthquake on Monday prompted concerns about a potential tsunami along Mexico’s Quintana Roo coast, but state authorities quickly ruled out this possibility.
Authorities are now concentrating on inspecting for any structural damage across the peninsula. Seismic activity is uncommon in the region, despite the proximity of the Oriente Fault, an active underwater fracture zone in the Caribbean, which runs south of Cuba. The closest distance between Cuba and the Yucatán Peninsula is less than 200 kilometers.
Quintana Roo authorities have activated emergency protocols and established communication with municipal officials. Inspections of critical and vulnerable infrastructure, including airports, shopping centers, public buildings, and tourist areas, are being conducted in coordination with local agencies. Special procedures have been publicized for residents.
As of now, no injuries, casualties, or major structural damage have been reported. The governor’s office has assured the public there is no tsunami risk for Quintana Roo's coasts, urging citizens to remain calm and seek information from official channels. Residents are encouraged to contact civil protection authorities for any structural damage reports.
Prior to last week's Cuba-centered quake, a small, shallow tremor was recorded in the state of Yucatán, approximately 370 kilometers west of Cancún. Seismologists have attributed recent low-intensity tremors in that area to a local fault line. (Source: Mexico News Daily)
