Michael Truell, Cursor CEO, Sees SpaceX Finalize $60 Billion Acquisition
Michael Truell, the 25-year-old CEO of AI coding company Cursor, is now estimated to be worth $1.3 billion following SpaceX's $60 billion acquisition of his company. Truell, a former Google intern and MIT dropout, co-founded Cursor, which evolved from a college project into one of Silicon Valley's rapidly rising tech firms. SpaceX confirmed this week it would proceed with the acquisition, a deal it had rights to pursue since April.

SpaceX has announced it will move forward with its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor, an AI coding company co-founded by 25-year-old CEO Michael Truell. The deal, which SpaceX had the rights to pursue since April, marks a significant milestone for Truell, whose estimated net worth now stands at $1.3 billion, according to Forbes.
Truell's journey began with an early interest in technology, starting to code at age 11 in New York City. He attended the Horace Mann School and later enrolled at MIT. By 18, he had completed his first year at MIT and was interning at Google, focusing on language models for feed ranking.
During his internship, Truell met Ali Partovi, an early investor in companies like Facebook and Airbnb. Partovi, who was recruiting for his Neo Scholars program—an accelerator for young tech talent—was impressed by Truell's coding abilities. Truell subsequently became one of the 30 individuals selected for the Neo Scholars program each year, with Partovi later becoming an early investor in Cursor.
Truell founded Cursor with MIT classmates Aman Sanger, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark. Their interest in AI predated the widespread industry impact of ChatGPT. Initially exploring a 'copilot for mechanical engineers,' the team eventually pivoted to AI coding after their first ideas faced challenges and they recognized their inherent passion for the future of coding.
Cursor's rapid growth has been a notable Silicon Valley success story. The company raised an initial $60 million funding round in June 2024, contributing to its soaring valuation ahead of the SpaceX acquisition.
According to Fortune, this acquisition and Truell's rapid ascent are considered among Silicon Valley's fastest success stories.
