Microsoft CEO States YouTube Monetizes Xbox Games More Than Microsoft Does
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has stated his belief that "there's more monetization of Xbox games happening on YouTube than at Microsoft." This comment follows Xbox boss Asha Sharma's recent commitment to "reset" the gaming division. Nadella emphasized the need for Xbox to find a way to innovate in both hardware and games sustainably, shifting from subsidizing entertainment to an economically viable model.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently indicated that YouTube generates more revenue from Xbox games than Microsoft does. He made these remarks during a conversation with Hard Fork, following Xbox boss Asha Sharma's commitment to "reset" the company's gaming branch.
Nadella addressed the state of Xbox in 2026, noting the challenge for the Xbox team is to "innovate both in hardware, as well as in the games, going forward in an economically viable way." He acknowledged Microsoft's significant investment in Xbox over the past 25 years, stating the current goal is to transform it into "a sustainable business that delivers what is fundamentally one of the best sources of entertainment."
The Xbox division has faced various challenges. These include confusion surrounding its exclusivity strategy, reports of millions of Game Pass subscribers lost after an October price hike, and questions regarding the brand's long-term viability. Asha Sharma's June 10 memo, issued after her first 100 days as Xbox CEO, highlighted upcoming difficulties, including a "hardware component crisis."
Nadella elaborated on the financial aspect, stating, "Still, the challenge we have is we've not been monetizing that entertainment. In fact, if anything, we've been subsidizing that entertainment." He reiterated the goal to build great games and hardware in an economically sustainable manner, rather than continuing to subsidize it.
