Microsoft Explores Xbox Spin-Off, Accelerated Game Development
Microsoft is reportedly considering significant changes for its Xbox brand, including the possibility of spinning it off into a separate entity or operating it as a wholly owned subsidiary. These deliberations come amid recent challenges for Xbox, including subscriber losses for its Game Pass service. The company also reportedly plans to increase investment in key game franchises such as Halo, The Elder Scrolls, and Fallout to expedite development, while potentially renewing its focus on console exclusive titles.

Microsoft is reportedly evaluating several strategic options for the future of its Xbox brand. These considerations include potentially spinning off Xbox into a separate company or reorganizing it to operate as a "wholly owned subsidiary" rather than its current status as a division within Microsoft.
These discussions emerge as Xbox has faced challenges in recent years. The Game Pass subscription service, for instance, reportedly lost millions of subscribers following a price hike. However, Game Pass has seen a partial improvement after a subsequent price cut and the removal of new Call of Duty titles from its library.
A potential spin-off could, in theory, free the Xbox brand from the high-profit-margin expectations typically associated with Microsoft as a whole. Conversely, such a move would also mean Xbox would no longer have direct access to the extensive resources of the larger corporation.
The report also indicates Microsoft's intention to increase investment in several of Xbox's major franchises, including Halo, The Elder Scrolls, and Fallout. The aim is to accelerate the development process for these titles, though the precise implications of this increased investment remain unspecified. The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5, for example, were announced years ago but have received limited updates.
Next month will see the launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved, which will be available on PlayStation 5 for the first time, alongside Xbox and PC. This PlayStation 5 release, however, may be a singular event as Microsoft is reportedly looking to re-emphasize console exclusives. An example cited is Gears of War: E-Day, which reportedly had a PlayStation 5 version under development but is no longer slated for release on that platform.
According to GameSpot, these potential changes were outlined in a report from The Information, citing Reuters.
