Klose, who set the record of 16 goals in 2014, believes both Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are well-positioned to surpass his mark. He expressed a personal preference for Messi to achieve this feat, citing his admiration for the Argentine forward.
Miroslav Klose, the former Lazio striker and current Nuremberg coach, expects his all-time World Cup goalscoring record to be surpassed during the 2026 tournament. Klose achieved his record of 16 goals in 2014, breaking Ronaldo Nazario's previous mark during the World Cup in Brazil.
Speaking to German outlet Süddeutsche Zeitung, Klose noted that the upcoming expanded edition of the tournament will feature more matches, thereby providing increased opportunities for players to score. He specifically identified Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe as strong candidates to break his record.
Klose stated he would be pleased if Messi were the one to achieve this, describing himself as a "huge fan" of the Argentine and calling him a "genius." He also mentioned a personal connection with Argentina's current coach, Lionel Scaloni, recalling their time as teammates at Lazio and a friendship developed while Klose showed Scaloni around Rome.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, Klose believes the eventual breaking of his record is inevitable.
