Joel Ángel Bravo Martínez, the mayor of San Miguel Amatitlán in Oaxaca, Mexico, was shot dead by armed men who broke into his home on Saturday. His murder occurred weeks after he had reportedly requested protection from state authorities, citing fears for his life. The Oaxaca Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation into the homicide, deploying specialized teams and initiating an interagency operation. Bravo's party, the National Action Party (PAN), stated that he had previously informed state officials of threats and an earlier attack. In contrast, Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara condemned the murder but stated that Bravo had not solicited help or reported threats directly to his office.
Joel Ángel Bravo Martínez, the mayor of the Mixtec region municipality of San Miguel Amatitlán in northern Oaxaca, was murdered on Saturday. According to media reports, armed men broke into his home and shot him dead.
The Oaxaca Attorney General's Office (FGEO) confirmed it is investigating the homicide. Multidisciplinary teams, including members of the State Investigation Agency (AEI) and personnel from the Institute of Forensic Services, were deployed to the scene for technical processing, body removal, and forensic evidence collection. The FGEO stated that a joint and immediate response was coordinated with state and federal security agencies, leading to increased police presence and a tactical operation aimed at blocking escape routes and locating those responsible.
Mayor Bravo, 53, a National Action Party (PAN) member who had been in office since 2022, was killed about a month after he reportedly requested protection from the state government due to fears for his life. According to the PAN, Bravo conveyed his fears to state authorities at a regional security meeting on May 11. The party also stated that he personally described his situation to Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara and was reportedly promised bodyguards who never arrived.
The PAN further claimed that weeks before his murder, Bravo had experienced an attack and a virtual kidnapping by armed individuals, an event that led him to seek urgent institutional assistance. The party criticized the state authorities, stating that the murder shows "irresponsibility and indifference" in the face of a reported threat.
Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara condemned Bravo's murder in a social media post, offering condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the community of San Miguel Amatitlán. However, in a Monday press conference, Governor Jara stated that Bravo had not solicited help or reported threats to his office. No arrests have been reported, and the motive for the crime remains unclear. Several criminal groups, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel, are known to operate in Oaxaca.
According to Mexico News Daily, the mayor was murdered weeks after his request for protection from state authorities went unmet.
