Olivier Giroud: Christian Pulisic is Key to USA's Success at Current Tournament
France's World Cup winner Olivier Giroud has stated that Christian Pulisic holds the key to the USA's aspirations in the current tournament. Giroud, a former teammate of Pulisic at Chelsea and AC Milan, highlighted Pulisic's maturity and mental strength, noting the high expectations placed on him by the national team. He believes Pulisic is ready to elevate the US team to the next level, despite a 'so-so' club season.
Olivier Giroud, a former World Cup winner with France, believes that Christian Pulisic possesses the necessary qualities to significantly impact the United States men's national team's performance in the current tournament.
Giroud, who recently retired from international football with France after the 2024 Euros and is now a BBC Sport pundit, previously played alongside Pulisic at both Chelsea and AC Milan. He expressed admiration for Pulisic, whom he described as a good friend and appreciated player.
Recalling Pulisic's early days at Chelsea after his 2019 move from Borussia Dortmund, Giroud noted the immense hope and pressure placed on Pulisic by the US national team from a young age. At AC Milan, Pulisic was affectionately known as 'Captain America' due to his prominent role and star profile, even when not wearing the armband. Pulisic has scored 33 goals in 85 appearances for the USA and became the youngest captain of the men's team at age 20.
Giroud stated he was not surprised by Pulisic's strong performance against Paraguay and expressed hope that a recent calf problem, which led to Pulisic's half-time substitution in that match, is not serious. While Pulisic had a mixed season with AC Milan, Giroud emphasized that the expectation for him to deliver for the USA remains constant.
Giroud highlighted Pulisic's mental strength, which he believes has grown through tough moments and injuries. He supported Pulisic's decision to skip last summer's Gold Cup for rest, viewing it as preparation for the current tournament. Giroud added that Pulisic, at 27, is more mature and ready to embrace the responsibility, both mentally and physically, despite increased expectations.
