Pentagon Utilizes Generative AI for Congressional Reports, Citing Efficiency Gains
The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) has begun using generative artificial intelligence tools to draft reports mandated by Congress. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the time required to complete these numerous national security documents. Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael highlighted the program's success, noting that 1.5 million personnel are reportedly using generative AI tools across the department.

The US Department of Defense is leveraging generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools to prepare hundreds of congressionally mandated reports on various national security topics each year.
Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael described the use of AI-generated reports for Congress as a key example of the Department of Defense's adoption of generative AI. Michael shared these details during an event hosted by the Hudson Institute think tank in Washington, DC, on June 12.
The Pentagon has made AI tools widely accessible to members of all six military branches since December 2025 through its bespoke GenAI.mil platform. This platform initially deploys Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government.
Michael illustrated the efficiency gains, stating that an AI could draft a congressional report in approximately five hours, a task that would otherwise require 200 hours of staffing time.
Additionally, the Pentagon claims that 1.5 million personnel across the department are currently utilizing generative AI tools.
