Pope Leo's return journey to Rome from Spain faced an unexpected delay on Friday when his scheduled Iberia charter flight was grounded due to a technical issue. The incident occurred after the Pope concluded a week-long visit to Spain.
The grounding took place at the airport in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, located in the Canary Islands. Pope Leo and his delegation were awaiting departure when the technical problem prevented the aircraft from taking off.
In response to the travel disruption, Spain's King Felipe VI extended an offer of assistance, providing his private Falcon jet for Pope Leo's transport. King Felipe VI personally escorted Pope Leo to the aircraft on the tarmac.
Pope Leo and the members of his delegation subsequently boarded the King's private jet. The flight departed, allowing for their return journey, albeit more than three hours after their original scheduled departure time.
