Santos Accelerates Youth Contract Renewals to Prevent Player Losses
Santos Football Club has implemented an aggressive strategy in the transfer market, focusing on extending contracts for its key youth academy prospects. The initiative aims to prevent young talents from leaving the club for free or at reduced fees after gaining prominence in the first team. Over the past year, Santos has secured contract extensions for at least 13 youth players, with individualized monitoring and career plans for each athlete. This proactive approach follows past incidents where the club lost players under unfavorable terms.
Santos has adopted a new approach in the transfer market, accelerating contract renewals for its main youth academy prospects. The club's objective is to ensure that players from its "Meninos da Vila" academy do not leave for free or for lower-than-expected fees to clubs abroad after establishing themselves in the first team.
Over the last year, the Santos board has secured contract extensions for at least 13 youth players. The coaching staff and football management are conducting individualized monitoring, designing specific career plans to maximize each player's performance.
Recent contract renewals include Miguelito, a Bolivian midfielder, whose deal now extends until May 2029. Under coach Cuca, Miguelito moved into a central playmaking role, contributing one goal and two assists in his last four matches. Gabriel Bontempo, Samuel Pierri, and Gustavo Henrique also had their contracts renewed, with Gustavo Henrique and Bontempo becoming starters by the end of the semester. Forward Robinho Jr. also renewed his contract and is undergoing a tactical adaptation, being tested as a playmaker by Cuca.
Beyond these recent agreements, Santos has secured a core group of academy players with deals running until at least 2028. This group includes goalkeeper João Pedro; center-backs João Ananias and João Alencar; left-backs Rafael Gonzaga and Vinícius Lira; midfielder Pepê Fermino; and forwards Mateus Xavier, Davizinho, and David Nogueira.
However, some members of the under-20 squad are still awaiting renewal talks. These players include midfielder Vinícius Fabri, defensive midfielder Nicola Profeta, center-back Marcelo Contreras, and forward Fernando Pradella, who recently made his professional debut against Chapecoense.
Santos' urgency in securing new contracts stems from previous experiences this decade. In 2021, the club's delay in acting led to Kaio Jorge signing a pre-contract with Juventus, forcing Santos to sell him immediately for 3 million euros to avoid losing him for free. Similarly, the renewal for Marcos Leonardo in 2022 was finalized just five months before he would have been eligible to sign with another club at no cost.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, this strategy aims to protect the club's investments in its celebrated youth system.
