Silicon Motion Executive Reports Near Disappearance of Retail SSD Market
A Vice President at Silicon Motion has stated that the retail solid-state drive (SSD) market is on the verge of disappearing. This shift is attributed to NAND manufacturers prioritizing memory shipments to artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Consequently, PC original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are increasingly sourcing third-party drives as direct NAND supply diminishes.

A top executive at Silicon Motion has indicated a significant shift within the storage industry, noting that the retail solid-state drive (SSD) market has "almost disappeared." The statement comes from the Vice President of Client Storage Solutions at Silicon Motion.
This decline in the retail SSD sector is reportedly due to NAND manufacturers reallocating their production priorities. These makers are now primarily focusing on delivering memory shipments to artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
As a direct result of these supply chain changes, PC original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are facing a shortage of direct NAND supply. This situation is compelling OEMs to purchase third-party drives to meet their production needs.
According to Tom's Hardware, these developments highlight a significant transformation in how NAND memory is distributed and consumed across different market segments.
