South Korean Footballers Reflect on Memorable World Cup Moments
South Korean national team players Kim Young-gwon, Jo Hyeon-woo, and Ju Se-jong have shared their cherished memories from past World Cup tournaments. For many nations, including South Korea, the objective extends beyond winning the trophy to creating lasting "World Cup moments" for players and fans. These moments include crucial goals against reigning champions, record-breaking assists, and impactful clean sheets that left a significant mark on their careers and the team's history.
For most nations participating in the World Cup, creating lasting memories and iconic moments becomes a primary objective, especially when winning the tournament is not a realistic prospect. Only eight countries have ever won the men's World Cup. According to Opta, South Korea has a 70% chance of reaching the first knockout stage, a 33% chance for the Round of 16, and a 12% chance to reach the last eight, with a 0.36% chance of winning the tournament. Japan, Asia's highest-ranked nation, holds a 1.25% chance.
For some "Taeguk Warriors" – South Korea's national football team – past World Cups have provided such moments, even without winning the ultimate prize. Defender Kim Young-gwon, who has appeared in three World Cups and played over 100 times for Korea, is known for his crucial goals.
His first World Cup goal came in the 92nd minute against Germany in 2018, securing a 2-0 victory that knocked the reigning champions out of the tournament. His second goal was against Portugal in 2022, helping Korea advance to the knockout stages. Kim Young-gwon stated that the goal against Germany stands out because the team fought until the very end, even after being effectively eliminated.
Goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo was a surprise starter at the 2018 tournament and played a pivotal role in the match against Germany, keeping a clean sheet despite Germany launching 26 shots. His impressive performance and spectacular saves made him a household name in Korea. Jo Hyeon-woo compared the thrill of his clean sheet to what he imagines scoring a goal feels like.
Midfielder Ju Se-jong also contributed to the memorable Germany win in 2018 by delivering the longest assist for an outfield player in World Cup history. Ju Se-jong expressed pride upon learning about this record, noting that it's a moment people might continue talking about. He recalled observing German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer far off his line and then delivering an accurate pass to Son Heung-min after winning possession.
