Steve Nickson Departs Newcastle United, Leaves Significant Transfer Legacy
Steve Nickson, Newcastle United's head of recruitment, is set to depart the club. He is credited with playing a pivotal role in several key transfers, including Miguel Almiron in 2019, Joelinton, and Bruno Guimaraes in 2022. Nickson's contributions spanned over several years, helping secure significant signings and supporting players even after their arrival at the club. He is expected to move to a Championship club, taking on a role with increased responsibility.
Steve Nickson, Newcastle United's head of recruitment, is preparing to leave the club, concluding a tenure marked by significant contributions to the team's transfer activity.
Nickson was instrumental in breaking Newcastle's transfer record in 2019 with the signing of Miguel Almiron. He also played a key role in the £40 million arrival of Joelinton and was involved in convincing Ayoze Perez to join Newcastle over Porto in 2014.
His influence extended beyond initial signings, as he remained a supporter for Allan Saint-Maximin, helping to secure a new long-term contract for the player in 2020. Nickson was one of the few senior figures to remain with the club after its subsequent takeover.
In 2022, Nickson personally traveled to Brazil to finalize the signing of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon. Reflecting on that transfer window, head coach Eddie Howe stated that Nickson "made sure that it was a real success" in the absence of a sporting director at the time.
More recently, Nickson continued to be an important part of the recruitment team, identifying defender Sven Botman and assisting in finalizing deals for Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali.
Nickson, who holds a sporting director qualification, is now expected to move to a Championship club to take on a position with potentially more responsibility. His departure will be another notable change behind the scenes for Newcastle, though the club currently has Ross Wilson as sporting director to oversee future recruitment plans.
