UEFA Awaits Spanish Court Ruling on Real Madrid's Negreira Dossier
UEFA has confirmed it will not take action regarding Real Madrid's dossier on the Negreira case until Spanish courts issue a definitive ruling. Real Madrid had sought intervention from the European football governing body, hoping for an investigation that could lead to sanctions against Barcelona. In response to comments made by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, Barcelona has filed a preliminary conciliation request, which is a precursor to a potential defamation lawsuit.
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has stated it will not intervene in the Negreira case until Spanish courts deliver a final ruling. This decision comes after Real Madrid attempted to involve UEFA, hoping an investigation by the European body could result in a ban for Barcelona.
Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid, had presented a dossier outlining the club's position on alleged irregularities related to the Negreira case. This document was referenced during a press conference on May 12, where Perez called for UEFA to take action beyond ongoing criminal proceedings. UEFA's stance means no European-level action will be taken while the case remains within the Spanish judicial system.
Barcelona has filed a preliminary conciliation request against Perez in response to comments he made at the May 12 press conference. This action is a precursor to a potential lawsuit for alleged defamation under Article 205 of the Spanish Penal Code. Barcelona seeks for Perez to retract statements they consider "slanderous and offensive" to the club's image, which they allege were made "knowingly and falsely."
A summons for the conciliation hearing is not expected before September. During this hearing, Perez will have the option to attend in person, send a legal representative, or not attend. Should the conciliation process fail, Barcelona has indicated its intention to proceed with a formal criminal complaint.
Acting president Rafael Yuste articulated the club's position, stating that the "name of Barça, this badge, will not be tarnished by anyone." He also remarked that the clubs would "see each other in court." (Source: Yahoo Sports Soccer)
